When this stunning Maya cotton sateen came in to the shop, I knew I wanted to make a skirt out of it. I decided that the latest release from Nina Lee would be the perfect candidate to show off the print. The Camden calls for a more structured fabric so the cotton sateen was a great choice.
I knew that I would have to pattern match the pockets so I made sure that I cut them out really precisely. I decided to cut the skirt front out on the fold rather than in two pieces to save myself from having to pattern match that as well! I cut the waistband on the opposite grain so that I could play about with the stripes.
As happy as I was with my pattern matching on the pockets, it was almost too perfect for anyone to actually see the pockets were there, so I added some pretty pink piping to them so that they really stand out. I was tempted to add it to the waistband too but worried about the extra bulk it would add around the zip.
I lined my skirt with a pretty pink lining fabric and it is a dream to wear. I do love a lined skirt, especially when worn with tights, as they don’t ride up!
I went with the longer version of the skirt but took off about an inch from the bottom once I had tried it on. I used my blind hem foot to finish the hem as it gives a lovely neat finish from the outside.
The fit was absolutely spot on – I didn’t need to make any adjustments to the pattern.
I love the mod style of the Camden skirt and I can’t wait to make the pinafore version for the Autumn to layer over roll necks.
