As we move towards spring, now is a great time to make some transitional garments that will work well for the changeable weather. I like to wear separates and garments that can be layered up when it is colder, but can also work way into summertime.
This week I am focusing on my favourite top and shirt patterns and how to work them into your spring wardrobe.
JERSEY TOPS
The Tilly and the Buttons Agnes jersey top is such a good all rounder and can be a great layering piece. There are different style options – various sleeve lengths, ruched sleeves and even a ruched detail in the front. It works well in cotton jerseys, like this Duck Egg leopard print. You can make it in a plain colour or go as wild with print as you dare!
The Jennifer Lauren Handmade Vielle is also a great option for a jersey top.
The Linden is a great sweatshirt for all year round. I love the short sleeved version for spring, when you just need a lighter layer. It would look great in our painted dots sweatshirting.
The Billie and Nora are also great alternatives.
SHIRTS
The Closet Core Kalle is my go to shirt pattern – there are three different hem lengths and multiple options for openings and collars. It works beautifully in the Ruby Star cottons, and our top pic would be the Florida Orange Blossoms print.
Other good shirt patterns are the Melilot and the Rosa. They all work well in crisp cotton lawns or poplins or chambrays.
BLOUSES
The Bloomsbury blouse has some gorgeous ruffle details and a wide curved yoke and can be smartened up with a skirt or trousers or dressed down with jeans. It looks great in a viscose or viscose twill. It would look so pretty in this dreamy Serenity viscose.
The Wilder gown also has a blouse version which is something that I wear a lot and looks great in drapey fabrics like rayon and crepe.
The Stevie has a top version which looks great with jeans. I wrote a blog post about how I created a lace back version here. Stevie is a great beginner pattern and works really well in a cotton lawn like this Dahlia Statement cotton.
The Josie blouse from Experimental Space has some pretty sleeve details which would look great in a plain fabric so that you can really show them off. We have some lovely plain viscose twills that would be ideal.
The By Hand London Hannah dress also has a wrap top option and it would be lovely in something like this teal washed linen.
